You should begin by marking off the section of the wall that is going to act as the ground. Making all of your mountains would be advisable at this time. Next you will paint in the brown over the base paint in thin layers until you get the color and tones you desire. Now it is time to put in your sky. You will need to mix a portion of the blue with the white to get to contrasting shades now paint the darker color upward half way the expanse. You will use the lighter shade to finish off the sky. Making skies in kid’s decor is something you do by feel. You can make your sky anyway you choose.

Once this dries you may proceed to add trees and maybe even a sun. The landscape is ripe for any items you would like to place there. Borders should be done with a dinosaur theme as well. If you are not an artist you can buy stencils or use a projector to trace the out line of the brontosaurus and maybe a T-Rex. You can go to any store that sells kid’s decor to find the borders you need.

It would also work if you were to put a cave entrance into one of the corners with a campfire glowing within. Have fun with your creation. Depending on the age of the child you can make cutouts of bones and egg fragments to give it more humph.

Making the decision to repaint your home is often easy in comparison to deciding what colors to use in each room. Adding art pieces to your kitchen walls is one of the quickest and easiest ways to liven up its overall look. Fortunately, inexpensive pieces of wall art are usually just as decorative and beautiful as those which cost a lot more. Display colorful and yet inexpensive posters in picture frames to add eye-catching focal points to the room. If you have some artistic talent, you could even paint or draw a few of your own original art pieces. Metal wall art pieces can also be used to add an interesting modern touch. Decorating with Live Plants

Plants are a natural for the kitchen, adding a beautiful touch of nature to the room. If you have a sunny kitchen window, decorate the window sill with pretty containers of herbs. Not only will the herbs serve as beautiful and fragrant kitchen decor, but you’ll also have a handy supply of fresh-cut herbs when you cook. Although live plants are always preferable to artificial plants, you can also use quality silk foliage in areas where it would be difficult to care for real plants.

Sometimes even the healthy foods you use when preparing your meals can do double-duty as kitchen decor. For example, try displaying a bowl of beautiful red apples as a table centerpiece, instead of hiding them in your refrigerator crisper drawer. Not only will natural fruits and vegetables add a beautiful decorating touch to the kitchen, but your family will probably also eat more healthy foods.

Floral Decorating Accents

Adding flowers to the kitchen is another great way to create visual interest. If you have a flower garden in your yard, decorate your kitchen with a bouquet of fresh-cut blooms. Or, create a floral arrangement from wildflowers and flowering weeds that you find around your yard. If you don’t have any fresh flowers of your own, most grocery stores sell beautiful mixed bouquets for affordable prices. Or, simply decorate your kitchen walls with photographs or paintings of flowers, displayed in picture frames. The look is fresh, simple and beautiful, but also quite affordable.

Feel lost when it comes to color?

A lot of us in Western Culture are, with good reason, scared of color. Why? Because trends over the last century have said that muted neutrals, whites, grays and blacks mean sophistication.

These Designer color techniques will take the mystery out of choosing paint colors.

Some ideas die hard but, take it from me, color has come back with a vengeance…because color is as exciting as life itself. Be real and authentic. Use those colors you love. The bottom line is it’s up to you how you use – or don’t use – color.

Choose a Monochromatic color scheme if you’re going for a soothing atmosphere.

While Monochromatic means colors in the same family, it doesn’t have to mean beige and more beige.

These schemes can be subtle and subdued when using lighter, muted color values, or dramatic and daring if you use rich, saturated hues. A monochromatic scheme might go with a deep purple on an accent wall and a purple base color skewed to a much lighter value on the ceiling and other walls. Shades of lavender and maroon can be worked in through fabrics, floor-covering and other paint accents.

By the way, purple is the “hot” (as in hip, cool, in) color right now. Oh, and if you’re skeptical as to how much color affects the way you feel, research has shown that purple can actually lower blood pressure. It’s purple, blue, green and the hues on that end of the color wheel that have that soothing influence. These colors and monochromatic color schemes are great choices for bedrooms, bathrooms and other spaces where you want to create a soothing, rejuvenating mood.

Contrasting Colors generate excitement and a warm social feeling. Remember these are the hues that lie opposite each other on the color wheel.

Contrasting schemes are great for bustling hubs of activity like Kitchens and Family Rooms…Interestingly enough, these contrasting colors are also referred to as Complementary colors.

Hey, opposites attract! So it’s no wonder these contrasting/complementary colors are pleasing to the eye. Try pairing some wonderful greens with a rich terracotta, or maybe golds with deep purple. Are you getting the sense that purple is in?

Designer Tip: When working with contrasting hues give one prominence – 60% or more – to avoid a frenetic, edgy feel.

Analogous Color Schemes work with several distinct hues that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel.

As with Contrasting/Complementary colors, if you use one color more prominently than the others you’ll create a more pleasing palette.

A Triad Color Scheme is fun and contemporary…It uses any three colors equally spaced from each other on the color wheel. Think orange, green and purple. Use these colors in varying proportions–a dominant color, a secondary hue and an accent color for pop. These schemes are awesome in deep, sharp colors for kids’ rooms…Or try it in “off” hues for a rich more traditional effect.

These are all great places to find a baseline to begin choosing your paint color palette. Remember you’re working with paint. If you don’t like your choice once it’s up, it’s relatively easy and inexpensive to paint over it.

I always buy, and suggest that you do too, a small “tester” amount of paint first. And, I always try out several hues. I’ve been surprised more than a few times by deciding on a color from a tester pot that I grabbed as an afterthought on my way out the paint store door.

You can paint test patches on your wall or on a scrap of wood or wallboard.

Don’t forget that light matters!

Make sure you take the time to see how your color looks on different walls, in both natural and artificial light and at different times of day. Be sure to evaluate your color choices during the times you’ll mostly be using the room. For instance, if it’s your bedroom and you work all day, I suggest you make your decisions looking at samples at night and early in the morning.

When you have a lampshade that does not match your room what are your options? Painting the shade is a wonderful possibility, but that is only the beginning, from there you can go in many different directions. We will talk about 5 different ways to create custom lampshades for any room.

The basic directions are the same for all the options we will talk about. The first step is to make sure the shade is free of dust, clean it carefully. The second is to lay the shade on a towel when working with it so that it does not slide around on the table. The third step is sealing the shade. You have the option to seal it or not, the decision is yours. If you choose to seal it you can use a high gloss or a matte finish (I like to spray it on) use the one most appropriate for your room. Sealing it helps when cleaning but you do not have to do it.

1 Let’s get started with the easiest way first. Simply add a new base coat of paint over the entire shade. You can use any type of paint, I like using the acrylic craft paints found in your local craft store. They are wonderful because they come in many different colors. Note: be sure to purchase a couple extra bottles, often the lampshade will take more paint than first thought.

2. With this second option we can build on the first one and paint a new base coat of color and then draw and paint a design of your choice. Or just paint anything you would like on the shade as is. Often you can pick up the pattern in a fabric you love and recreate it on the lampshade.

3. The next modification is to paint a design on the inside of the shade. Always use a black or very dark color so that is stands out when the lamp is turned on. This creates a wonderful look when you turn on the lamp and very subtle image appears.

This can be a bit more challenging just because the area you are working in is much smaller, but it is very doable. You can easily use a stencil, simply use the special spray on glue (it is in your craft store) that creates a tacky surface easily removed without leaving residue on the back of your lampshade. Place the pattern on the inside of the shade and apply the paint. You can also make any kind of design by drawing and painting it on.

Another option is to cut out a design using black construction paper and adhering it to the inside of the shade same result, and easy to change when you want something new.

4. How about using silver leaf on the inside of the shade, it gives it a very classy look and is easy to apply. It works best on an opaque shade. Again the only challenge is the tight spaces you have to work in. Apply the adhesive following the directions and then carefully add the silver leaf. You can also use the gold or copper leaf.

5. This one does not require any paint but is the most fun of all. What about adding interesting objects to the shade, like a beautiful piece of jewelry especially if you have hand painted a beautiful custom design and the jewelry would act as the final touch. It adds a lot of class when done correctly; remember with this one less is more.

What about silk flowers arranged in a beautiful display on the shade, any type of decoration can be added. You can simply add an edge of ribbon or fabric to the shade and have your own custom look. These can be applied with any adhesive that dries clear, be sure and read on the label to make sure it will work on your lampshade.

As always take a before picture of your project. I love to use these methods to create custom shades. It makes me so excited to take a really ugly shade and transform it into a work of art. Have fun.
